Monday Writing Update—Dec 12, 2022

Another week. Another update. Now in a new format.

The Fragments Trade Paperback Edition is out

After a last-minute switch to a glossy cover, the Trade Paperback version of the Fragments was released on Tuesday, December 6, 2022. It feels weird to hold your debut novel in your hands—like I made this but it’s no longer mine.

The House Manuscript

The first draft of The House is now at 53k words. Progress is picking up after I came to terms with the fact that the initial structure was not working. I moved one character out of one of the two major locations and plot lines to a side plot that is gaining momentum and importance. As it it turns out, things in the Spheres are not as they seem.

Discovering—or admitting—that a draft doesn’t carry the story forwards can be discouraging at any stage. But my first drafts are very rough around the edges, and I have poured zero love into the prose so far. For me, a first draft is pretty much a proof of concept for the plot and narrative structure. So, if I get stuck around the middle point, it’s usually because something is just not right. And it wasn’t.

So changes have been made that will require significant re-writes of the previous chapters, but not just now. Now, I plunge through the middle to the end, just in case more changes are looming ahead. Wish me luck.

Other news

A new website and shop are going to launch in 2023, sometime after the summer break! The new shop will enable me to sell eBooks directly—with Bookfunnel making sure you’ll get your books onto your devices—as well as special limited Paperback and Hardcover editions next year. Well, and my artwork, of course. Can’t wait for you to see it! More coming soon!
