I got this—Daily Updates, Publishing The House—The Spheres Book 2

Short daily updates between now and the release date of Book 2.

Status: ‘Final’ revision | Word count: 95,760 (about 15,000 since last update)

So, I decided to go with the flow and keep “following the process” for later. I’ve been going through chapters 29 to 39 to get a better sense of what works and what doesn’t. I’ve learned heaps, mostly about how to approach things differently next time.

#ARGH … Chapters 24 to 28 were a total disaster. Aligning the timeline in three POV plot lines is like putting together a puzzle while the pieces are moving and changing colours. I kept the revisions in a the rough draft instead of detailed line edits because this part still feels like it’s on the brink of collapse.

Chapters 21 and 22 are done. Chapter 23 is getting there. I feel like a broken record, but how can this take me so long and how did I ever finish The Fragments? #overit #questioninglifechoices

The revisions for Chapter 20 were a nightmare. I eventually decided to rewrite it, deleting some scenes and moving others … the chapter flows better and is stronger, but I can’t believe this took a week. #scream.

Chapters 17, 18, and 19 are revised! Reshuffling my days worked—kind of—and with some other bits and bobs out of the way, it’s go, go, go! Maybe I’ll actually finish this before 2026 rolls around! 🌟

January 16, 2025—WIPQuote

“She set the towel aside and emptied her collection of random electronic parts, wires, and metal pieces from the coverall’s pockets—her salvage from the recycling station whenever Mitt wasn’t looking.
She knelt before her bunk, arranging the small pile on the floor.
Nothing.
She pushed the offering closer.
A spindly limb, woven from fibre and metal cables, reached out from the shadows but fell short of the pile. Eass nudged the pile closer to the edge.
The tendril advanced but remained just out of reach.
Eass placed a metal gear directly under the bench’s edge. The tendril hesitated, then shot forward, snatched the gear, and vanished back into darkness. She had tried to coax whatever was hatching under her bunk into the open, but had never seen more than tiny claws or wiry limbs.
When Mitt had complained about more missing material, Eass had started feeding the thing, hoping to stop it ransacking Mitt’s supplies.
Eass nudged the pile closer, but the tendril remained hidden.
‘I have no idea when we’ll be back at the reclaim centre. This might be all there is for a while.’
Silence.
‘If you steal more from Mitt, she’ll find out about you, and she’ll get you out of there no matter what.’
The creature remained in the shadows. She considered setting a trap to catch the tendril next time it reached for the pile, when her terminal pinged.
Eass sighed and reached for the device on her bed.”

Chapters 15 and 16 are revised. Both needed more attention than expected… #ARGH. I’ll try to reshuffle my days a bit. At the moment, I am supposed to write 1 to 2 hours in the mornings and evenings. But after working outside on the landscaping, I am too tired to write. I’ll move the renovation “sprints” to the dead time between 2 and 5pm instead and see how that works.

I got this, right?

Chapter 14 is revised, and I am halfway through Chapter 15! Yay! Both were/are mostly rewrites and gaps. And… #Drumroll I managed to get my artwork ready and shipped for my first group show in 2025. #HappyDance.

I got this, right?

Chapters 12 and 13 are revised!
I’m working on my content strategy for my YouTube channel and watched writing update reels from November 2022… It’s hard to believe that it took two more years to get Book 2 to where I am today. What happened to 2023 and 2024? How is 2025 even a real date?

#ARGH

I got this, right?

*) Many uncomfortable lessons learnt while watching those reels… that content was neither useful nor usable…

Status: ‘Final’ revision | Word count: 41,293 (11,200 since last update 10 days ago)

Chapters 9, 10, and 11 are revised!

The revision is going okay-ish, but I’ll be glad once Part 2 is finished. Fingers crossed that Parts 3, 4, and 5 will need less gap-filling and rewrites!

I’m working toward committing to a realistic release date, but there’s still a scary amount of work ahead:

  • Final copy edits and proofreading for the ARC
  • Organizing ARC readers and feedback
  • Cover design
  • Illustrations
  • Ebook formatting
  • Interior design for the paperbacks
  • and so much more!

Bear with me while I get my head around it all.

Seasons greetings and a happy new year to all of you out there.

Chapters 8, the last chapter in Part 1, and Interlude 1 are revised. The overall word count for Part 1 is just over 28k, not counting the Prologues or the Interlude.

I’ll select a few teasers soon, including another sample chapter!

P.S. I finished listening toTomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow by Gabrielle Zevin—a novel length love letter to early video games. Highly recommend.

Status: ‘Final’ revision | Word count: 25,531 in total, 4,611 since last update 3 days ago.

Chapters 6 and 7 are revised. I made a few more changes in Chapter 4, adding more characterisation. I reached my word budget for Part 1, set to 25k, with still one chapter to go … I will need to keep an eye on it.

More soon.

P.S. I spent 2 to 3 hours landscaping the garden each day, listening to Silver in the Wood by Emily Tesh: one of my favourites this year!

Life happened. It did not include much writing until this weekend, but now I am back with Chapter 5 polished to a shine.

“Dusty beams of light fell through high windows, gathering in an empty pool in the centre of a round hall. Painted tiles clung to the walls and floors, the grout between them dark with age, their blue-green hues faded beneath decades of dust and abandonment. Water stains marked where pipes had leaked through the vaulted ceiling, bleaching colour from a painted summer sky. Archways rimmed with cracked marble revealed smaller chambers with tiered wooden benches, their teak slats warped but mostly intact. The faint scent of minerals seemed to seep from wood, stone, and metal—a memory of the steam that must once have filled the hall, as if the building still remembered its purpose, conjuring the ghosts of long-gone patrons, lounging on the soft-edged stone benches circling the hall, resting or waiting for their turn in the pool or steam.”

Sound bite

Taking on more scenes in Chapter 4! My workflow with Claude improved after I took the time to set up a project for the revisions. I’ll share more about this in a new post in my series to show how writers can use Claude as a line editor and copywriter, as well as a critique group. I also brought ProWritingAid back into the mix—the UX is still obnoxious, but it can be helpful if used together with Claude.

I got this!

November 25, 2024

Status: ‘Final’ revision | Word count: 882 (12,550 total)

I returned to Chapter 2 to tie up loose ends in the transitions between Chapters 2 and 4—both written from Tayl’s POV—and still managed to start Chapter 4’s opening!

Hurray!

Interlude

I went down another rabbit hole with elevenlabs.io this weekend. I ran into issues with text length in my tier and the more challenging names—a common issue in the speculative genre fiction. I followed the instructions and changed spellings to get closer to the pronunciation I had in mind. Some instances are perfect, but the voice reads the names differently each time. There are other options, including using phonemes, but that requires quite a bit of mark up. So I’ll look into this further over the summer break.

For the visual representation of the audio narration, I decided on a very simple, reusable format—a static background (Photoshop) with the cover and an audio visualisation in the front. I promptly got lost in the labyrinth of available tools. The final audio visualisation is via veed.com—a nice app, but too expensive for adding a bit of movement.

Let me know what you think or if you are, or have been, trying something similar!

Interlude

I sold a book today. From my locally printed edition, on my locally made and hosted website, with my hand-crafted cover and illustrations, my blood and heart in it.

And the amazing person paid a extra for a signature and a hand-drawn bookmark.

I am going away to have a little cry now.

Notes to myself: Not every single sentence you write needs to be perfect.

Only most of them.

November 17, 2024

Status: ‘Final’ revision | Word count: 2,066 (8,778 total)

After re-surfacing from the rabbit hole, I actually got some revisions done and Chapter 2 is done… just 100K more words to polish… why am I doing this again?

For my brownie points: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I got this.

November 15 and 16, 2024

More progress on Chapter 2! I played with elevenlabs.io to research options for a machine-generated audiobook today and went down a rabbit hole. I didn’t expect much, so I was surprised to find the perfect voice in their default set called “Daniel.”

I added the result to the sample chapter page “The House, Prologue 1—A Visitation” and my YouTube Channel as well as below

Let me know what you think! 🙂

I am a third through Chapter 2.

Yay.

These are all the words I have to spare today.

Prologues 1 and 2 are in final draft, as is Chapter 1—and drum roll—Prologue 1 is now available to read online!
This is still very slow going. It takes me more than an hour to revise a page (around 450 words). At this pace, it will take me 250+ hours to get the manuscript into its final draft. And I have only an hour a day for revision…

That is scary.
Very scary.

I’ve started on the final line edits and copy editing. Every paragraph, sentence, and word is being scrutinized and judged.

And it takes ages.

And I love it.

I got this. Right?
