Overdue studio makeover to reign in the chaos.
The subfloor in my studio had become very wobbly and needed repairs—it is in a 120-year-old cottage, so no surprises there.
While clearing out my studio for the builders, I started to think about a long-overdue workspace makeover. The room is just over ten square metres, so every bit needs to work hard. The aim was to clear the floor, create more shelf space and storage, and to move the printing press onto a table with rollers to allow a more flexible studio set-up.
After the builders were done and the chaos had subsided to the normal level, I closed up the floor, painted one wall black, and installed a wall shelf system. The budget only allowed for one sheet of plywood, limiting the number of shelves. I decided on one deep shelf high up to store anything I don’t use on a daily basis, four narrow shelves to dry paper mache and store making supplies, and another deep bottom shelf that doubles as a work counter.
Finally, we moved the printing press onto a sturdy metal worktable left over from another makeover, and placed my magazine rack underneath the new work counter.
I moved back in yesterday, and you can see three of my new creations happily drying on the new shelves.
It still will be chaotic for the next few weeks as I am not allowed to move anything into the studio without going through it and deciding what to keep and what needs to go.
