#JustCheckingIn, September 2025

Just in time for a quick September Check in!

So… Where Are Things in September 2025?

With the Queenstown Art Show deadline looming, September was full of frantic preparations in the calm before the storm.

Art

The new paper mache tribe is almost done, both the familiar faces and the new additions, but my plan to channel exhibition pressure back into printmaking didn’t quite pan out the way I’d hoped. The prints had their own agenda, apparently. I’m giving it another go this week while figuring out how to fill what suddenly feels like an enormous 3.6 metres of empty wall.

The silver lining? Overall I feel strangely hopeful. Despite dismal sales, something feels different in the studio. My daily routines have settled into a rhythm that’s less wrestling with the odds and more crafting while allowing for failure—I abandoned two of the large paintings, finished the three others, and just moved on. Small shift, big difference.

To keep things interesting, I applied for the Wellington Art Show in February 2026 and got a space. More walls to fill!

Writing

The deadline to get ‘The House’ out this year is getting very tight. I am fitting as much writing in as I can, but the revisions have almost crawled to a halt. Not good! I’ll see that I can somehow come to a conclusion in October.

Renovations

The trees in the back are pruned, and now a mountain of cut-offs are waiting to be shredded!

So September went like most of this year: looming deadlines, and too many moving parts crying for attention!

Onward and upward … I guess
