A Curious Nature – Many Thanks ^_^

First Snapshots

Rieko and I were totally overwhelmed by the amount of people who joined us for the opening night. Rieko sold all her work during the opening and we got very nice feedback from everybody!

I would like to thank Thistle Hall for hosting the show, Inverlochy Art School for their support, Sophie for being her beautiful self and helping me with the set-up and Stefan Lehmann for taking the pictures, Jonno and Rieko for their patience with my totally stressed-out self.

Many thanks to all who made it to the show!

Sneak Peak – New Art Toys

Raccoon new work by minu

I am working on artwork for a group exhibition in a couple of weeks. I usually hate these fake photo effects, however, in this case it supports the story.

It took me weeks of trial and error to find a way to turn the “Afternoon Tea” prints into toys. This is the first one that kind of works, I still need way more practice with the joints… the raccoon is my first “traditionally joined” toy, meaning you can turn the head and move the arms. I am still not 100% happy with the toy. But after spending countless hours in the studio – and loads of money on parts and  fabric – and wanting to give up around 1000 times in the last 3 weeks I feel like this could go somewhere nice…

… and it would be boring to do things one actually knows how to do anyway…

would it not?

Heads Up: Toi Poneke Artists Annual Group Show

Heads Up is a new group exhibition by the resident artists of Toi Pōneke Arts Centre. Thirteen artists will display their creative talent and best works as a showcase of all the centre can offer. This is a great opportunity to view and purchase artwork by some of Wellington’s brightest emerging talent – it also gives insight to what goes on behind the many studio doors at Toi Pōneke.

Visitors to the gallery will enjoy the wide variety of artwork on display. The gallery will be filled with painting, jewellery, masks, collage, video, photography and small objects – with much of it available for sale. The artists involved are: David H Brown, Shelley Brown, Annie Collins, Natalie Ellen-Eliza, Nicole Freeman, Mui Leng Goh, Rebecca Lees, Lisa Martin, Vaune Mason, Jhana Millers, Minu, Audrey Slater and Heather Small.

Heads Up opens at 5.30pm on Tuesday 24 May at Toi Pōneke Gallery, 61 Abel Smith Street and runs until Saturday 4 June. The Gallery is open 9am–7.30pm weekdays and 10am–4pm weekends.

Head On Show – Work in Progress, Part 2

Monday was Set-up day… some of us did not get much sleep in the days before the show ^_^…

That was the first time I actually saw the bear standing up… The foot claws and the leaves were still in the making.

The bear is growing up …

The little shadow box in the making…

Head On Show – Work in Progress, Part 1

This is work for the Head on group show. I am a bit frantic because I am seriously running out of time, but in between panic attacks it is actually fun. For this show I pick up the ‘awoke’ series. This is ‘The Bringer of Dreams’. I am working on one of the little boxes I did for the NZ Art Show and a 2.2m installation.
